HUNTREE NURSERY      APRIL 2024       NEWSLETTER
Hi there, everyone!   It’s SPRING!

EmojiLittle green leaves are popping up all over!    Trucks are bringing us lots of great plants!  We are excited!  We just received a boat load of perennials!

EmojiOur first shipment of Rhododendrons has arrived.  And, of course, they are gorgeous and locally grown… sure to serve up a super splash of color this spring.  Remember that they need nice, loose, loamy moist organic soil, and need a sheltered location out of the wind and afternoon sun.  They cannot tolerate heavy clay soil.    For a sunnier location, try Azalea poukenensis.

EmojiPansies are here.  Those precious little faces are harbingers of a colorful new season!

EmojiThis is the perfect time to plant evergreens.  Give them a chance to root in before warm weather.  Bonide Root and Grow will kickstart their root growth.  Apply at planting time and again one week later.

EmojiWhat’s new:
Micro clover seed –   sweet short clover with very small leaves, fine texture and white flowers.  Grow in cracks around patio stones or sow into your lawn.   They are  sturdy, nitrogen fixing, and drought tolerant.
Great little white flowers for the pollinators!
Large packages of  flower seeds –  comes ready to sow with fertilizer and soil improvements all in one bag!    All three types are great for the birds, butterflies and pollinator insects!
                                                                Zinnia Mix
                                                                Butterfly and Hummingbird Mix
                                                                Semi Shady Wildflower Mix

EmojiFarmer’s Defense arm protector sleeves.    Prevents scratches on your arms   –    great when you are deadheading your roses, etc.!!!    Protects UV ray exposure to your arms.    Light weight and cool to wear.

EmojiSuper Soil Amendments to make your plants flourish:
Organic Mushroom Compost by our favorite organic company  ESPOMA.
Organic Raised Bed Mix  –   It’ll beef up your veggies for sure!
Organic Land and Sea Compost  –    YouTube’s  Laura from Garden Answer thinks this is the greatest!

EmojiHellebores are the Queen of the Spring Garden!   Why?   Look at this list of reasons:
Easy to grow  +  Multiplies readily  +  Lustrous evergreen foliage  +
Grows in any soil  +  Part shade to full shade  +  Long bloom time – March through June!
Deer resistant (I should have mentioned that first)
Great cut flower – lasts indefinitely in a vase!
We have great selection of colors!    White, pink, purple, yellow, and black.
EmojiDear oh deer!! Yes, we have a good supply of deer repellant.  My advice to you is this:  When you plant a new plant, immediately spray it with deer repellant.  They need to know right off the bat that your new addition tastes terrible.   Speaking of deer, junipers are not favored by deer.  Just saying.

Emoji Garden Shed Spring Cleaning Swap
Go to it.  Dig into your shed and pull out good garden junk that you don’t want anymore.  Bring it in and we’ll pawn it off on someone who will treasure it and give it a good home.  (We did this a few years ago and it was really fun!)   It begins on April 19 and ends April 29.   Bring stuff and take stuff.

EmojiNow’s the time to put up a bluebird house, or clean out your existing house.  We have 2 pairs perching on our houses!  Yay!

Looking forward to seeing you this spring!
