HUNTREE NURSERY NEWSLETTER         MID JUNE 2024

We’re trudging through June.

We made it through the awful heat and dryness.  Whew!  Congratulations to us all.  A few plants did not fare so well.  We have been getting sad pics of plant casualties.    It was a stressful time and some just ran out of water and turned brown.  Others had some browning of leaves.   Chances are it may not be fatal.   So don’t be hasty to put them on the brush pile.   They may push out new leaf buds so encourage them with extra water and loving care.   Make sure those challenged plants stay moist with regular thorough soaking several times a week.

There have also been a plethora of bugs appearing on the scene.   This heat has made them hatch out in droves.  Be on the lookout for aphids.  A few Japanese Beetles and tomato hornworms have also been spotted.   Neem Oil and Captain Jack’s Dead Bug Brew are nice organic solutions.  Spray in the morning or evening once a week or when you see a new infestation.   (Check the undersides of the leaves also.) If you want to bring us a leaf to help you diagnosis, just bring a leaf or two in a baggie so that we can take a look with you.

4th of July is coming up already!    We will be open on Thursday, the 4th   10 to 4.  Friday and Saturday 9 to 5, and Sunday 10 to 4.   So fit us into your weekend schedule.

Put some excitement into your garden…. And we can help you do that.

  • We have gobs of Hydrangeas and they are bursting with a million flower buds. Our favorites are panicle Hydrangeas because of their toughness.  They are not as finicky as the Mopheads.  They can take sun or shade and come in all sizes.    Little short 2-3 ft. cuties – Firelight Tidbit to gigantico Limelight Prime (6 to 8 ft – which would make a wonderful screen from the neighbors’ ugly purple shed)….   And many more in-between sizes as well.    Need a small tree that gets only 6 to 8 ft. tall and blooms all summer?   We’ve got just the ticket:  Limelight, Quick Fire, Moon Rock, and Firelight.
  • Also, we have new décor for your garden. Check out our new dragon fly and butterfly garden stakes. And we have more wind spinners.

Keep your annuals going strong by weekly fertilizing with liquid fertilizer such as Jack’s Classic or Miracle Gro.   Even if you used Osmocote slow release fertilizer on your annuals this spring, you can still do a weekly application of liquid too.  Or you can also use Espoma Flower Tone or Plant Tone granular which will last 6 weeks.   Organic gardeners, have you tried Sustane Compost Tea Bags?   David uses them and swears by them for his Tomatoes.
