HUNTREE NURSERY NEWSLETTER MARCH 2025

Rumor has it that we’re open for the season.    Well, it’s true!  We’ve got regular hours now, Monday through Saturday 9 to 5 and Sunday 10 to 4.   So you can come on in and get the goods you need to get your gardens going.   We are still setting up the garden center so we still look kind of naked out there, but the store is looking good.    Trucks of plant material will begin to roll in real soon and Cindy & Matt the Brit are busy bringing plants up from our growing area.  (Our first truckload comes tomorrow!  Yay!)

It’s a great time to apply fertilizer and get some mulch down before the weeds come up.  (Wait to spread weed killer on your lawn until you see the weeds up and growing.)

Trim back your roses, removing all dead, brown branches.  The Knockouts really enjoy getting shortened down.  They will branch out, become fuller, and thus have more flowers.   Remember roses are heavy feeders so give them some nourishment to get them started this spring.  We really like Espoma Rose tone for the job.

Cut back your ornamental grasses down as short as you can.  They will send out new shoots from the ground when it’s time.  (It’ll be a while yet.  They are late sleepers).    Trim your perennials down to the ground.  They will also start over from the roots at ground level.  The exceptions are:

  • Lavender –   just give a light trim
  • Russian Sage   – cut half of last year’s growth off

Do NOT trim your Lilacs now.  You will be cutting off this year’s flowers.   Yikes!

Matt the Brit says: “Come in and buy something!”

David says:  Make it easy on yourself.  Spread compost on your beds before your plants start coming up.

Are you confused about when to put grub control on your lawn?  Right now, the ground is cold.  The grubs are still deep in the soil.  Wait a bit ‘til the middle of April to apply All Season Grub Control (which we have).

Due to popular demand, we will have our ‘Clean Out the Garden Shed’ event.  Bring your good garden junk and trade it for other people’s good garden junk.  It’s fun!  This event will take place Saturday, April 19 through Sunday April 27.

Is it too early to plant trees?   No!   As long as you can dig in the soil, you can plant.  Early planting gives the roots a longer time to get established before the heat of the summer.

Are your evergreens looking yellow?  We have Liquid Iron and Iron Tone to help green them up.  It’s a great time to apply fertilizer as well.   We like Holly Tone for evergreens and well as Dogwoods, Holly, and your Blue Hydrangeas.

Feel free to call us if you have any gardening questions.   We will be happy to help.

Welcome to Spring!  We are excited and we bet you are too!
