Hi there, all you plant-a-holics!

It finally turned fall!   How fun to feel the chill in the air and the warmth of the sun at the same time.    That’s why we love Michigan.    Change is so refreshing.    We see it happening in the garden and that gets us excited.

Get yourself a treat.  Rip out the bedraggled annuals and grab a mum or two and some ornamental cabbage to perk you up.   It’s also time to think about planting bulbs for next spring’s excitement.    If you have deer (don’t we all?)  you are safe with daffodils and hyacinths.

We are still in a major drought, even though we got an inch of rain the other night.  I dug down in my soil and it’s still DRY!     So, once again, I say   WATER, WATER, WATER!  Sorry.  Maybe one of these days I won’t have to say that.    It is important that your precious plants don’t go into the winter dry.   Pay particular attention to your broad- leafed evergreens such as Rhododendrons and Azaleas.

Things to do:

*Fertilize trees and shrubs.  (Good idea this fall since everything is stressed!)

*Plant a tree.   Fall is the perfect time!   Remember how hot it was this summer?  Trees reduce the air temperature by 20 degrees!

Plant this fall and get those roots growing.  Believe it or not, roots are actively growing when the tree looks like it’s not doing

anything.

*Protect your plants from winter Deer Damage.  We have 3 kinds of spray and fencing, too.

*Protect your evergreens from winterburn by spraying with antidessicant late this fall.  It seals in the moisture.

*Plant spring flowering bulbs now through November.

So come on in and select your bulbs.   It is very beneficial to fertilize them when planting.  Feed a bulb and get rewarded in the spring.
