HUNTREE NURSERY NEWSLETTER         MID JUNE 2024 We’re trudging through June. We made it through the awful heat and dryness.  Whew!  Congratulations to us all.  A few plants did not fare so well.  We have been getting sad pics of plant casualties.    It was a stressful time and some just ran out of water and turned brown.  Others had some browning of leaves.   Chances are it may not be fatal.   So don’t be hasty to put them on the brush pile.   They may push out new leaf buds so encourage them with extra water and loving care.   Make sure those challenged... Hi there fellow gardeners! How can summer be over already????   It’s just not fair!    Oh, but we do love the fall season.  Time to get excited for change.  That’s always invigorating. Mums, ornamental cabbage and kale, ornamental peppers, Montauk Daisies, etc.  will be here tomorrow, and the daffodil and tulip bulbs, etc.  are heading this way in a week or so (as soon as they get off the boat from the Netherlands, literally).  It’s like Christmas when they arrive! Happy Summer Solstice to You! Hi there, fellow gardeners! It’s June… and it’s hot! LETS ALL DO A RAIN DANCE!!!! This is a CRAZY and highly unusual June. Mother Nature is very stingy with the water and this drought makes us very nervous. Here are top watering tips for you: • Please get out your hoses and soak your precious plants…even your established ones… Daily for new plantings. • Oscillating sprinklers work great because they cover a larger surface. September Newsletter 2021 Yay!  It’s September!  Wahoo!  The cool air makes me want to get out in the garden and pull all those weeds that shot up during the blasting heat… and watch all the bees and butterflies flitting around. These are the questions being asked at the counter: Do you have Pansies?    Yes!  We just got them in yesterday.’ What can I use to kill my crabgrass?   The answer is nothing at the moment.  Crabgrass is an annual grass.  It is going to die.  But it has deposited lots of seeds for next year.  So next late April/... It’s summer!  Days are long.  There’s moisture in the soil once again!  And our flowers are happy! We just received a new batch of roses.  We now have some very pretty Drift Roses – red and apricot which have been hard to find this season.  They are low growing and very floriferous!  We also have some climbing roses, too. Remember that deadheading your flowers encourages more color in your garden.  By removing spent flowers, the plant can put it’s energy into forming new flowers instead of producing seeds.  It will also make the plant bushier and fuller, thus more flowers...
